Many of us have fond memories of watching Blue Peter and Art Attack, making models and toys from bits and pieces around home and having a lot of fun in between. Whether you are hoping to amuse your children on a rainy day or if you're hoping to entertain a big kid these fun projects are great to try!
Model LadybirdTo make the model ladybird you will need;
- An egg box
- Red, black and white Poster Paints
- Scissors
- 4 Black Pipe cleaners
Start by removing one of the cups from the egg box. Use your poster paints to paint just over half the cup red. The other part is for the head and should be painted black. Use a little more black paint to mark some spots on the ladybirds shell.
Use your scissors to puncture holes for the legs and antennae (you might want to get an adult to help). Put three holes either side of the shell for the legs and two through the top of the head for the antennae.
Take three of your pipe cleaners and push them through each leg hole on one side through to the other and bend down into shape. For the antennae take half a pipe cleaner and push it through the holes and then bend the pipe cleaner into place.
Use the white paint to add eyes to the head and there you have it, your own model ladybird!
Paper Mache GhostTo make a paper Mache ghost you will need;
- A balloon
- A bowl or plant pot (to fit your balloon in)
- Newspaper
- Flour
- Water
- A pan
- A wooden Spoon
- Scissors
- White poster Paints
- A black marker pen
First you will need to make the paper Mache glue. You may want an adult to help you with this as it can be quiet messy!
Mix half a cup of flour with half a cup of water in a pan. Stir until the mix is thin and runny. Add another two cups of water to the pan whilst stirring the mixture. Leave to simmer for three minutes and then leave to cool.
Make your newspaper and tear it into strips. The length of the strips doesn't really matter but try to get them all an inch wide.
Blow up your balloon and wedge into your bowl or plant pot firmly so that it can't wobble. Take one of your strips of newspaper and dip it into your glue mixture. Remove any excess glue and wrap the strip around your balloon, laying it flat and following the contours. Repeat this with the rest of your strips until you have covered the top of your balloon.
When you have covered the top put your balloon in a safe place to dry overnight. You will then need to repeat this twice more so that you have three dried layers on your balloon.
When your balloon is completely dry (this may take a few days) use your scissors to pop it. Peel the popped balloon away from the hardened paper Mache (taking care not to weaken it) and throw the balloon away.
Cut the trailing strips into shape (resembling a classic ghost under a white sheet). Cut two holes at the top for eyeholes and paint the rest of the ghost white. Leave the paint to dry and your ghost is ready! You can use your ghost as a table decoration or hang it from the ceiling. Great for Halloween!
